Why doesn't anyone talk about how the roof and siding can wreck your home's foundation?
A leak in your roof and siding can cause a chain of events to happen that cause havoc on your home. These leaks can happen from missing shingles, cracked flashing, broken siding and even clogged gutters.
When we inspect a home after a storm, we check for damage both on the exterior and the interior. Be sure you are keeping an eye out for any signs of water damage.
If you do notice you have interior repairs caused by a storm and potential water damage, you'll see water penetration on your drywall and possibly cracks. Sometimes when those cracks start appearing on the corners of your windows, it leads to a foundation problem.
You'll notice these same cracks next to the doors, windows and even along side the top of the ceiling. If you notice any signs of water damage, cracking or discoloration on your walls, windows and doors, you definitely want to make sure you're getting your foundation checked as well.
Why your foundation?
The water can not only saturate your insulation and drywall, but also your frame. When the frame, insulation and drywall have water, it can compromise your home's entire structure.
Since water flows with gravity, it will seep down the wall and into the ground around the foundation of your home.
This pooling of water around your foundation can cause soil erosion and/or soil expansion. Soil expansion is common in Central Texas where there is an abundance of clay in the soil.
Expanding and contracting soil put stress on the foundation, causing cracks, shifting, settling and heaving.
Having a proper gutter system and ensure the water running off your home is directed away from the foundation.
Preventative maintenance can save you from expensive foundation repair bills down the road.
